Alvin W. Harrison was born on November 9, 1940, in Aiken, South Carolina to the late Reverend Henry L. Harrison and Alice Bell Weaver Harrison.  He departed this life on January 25, 2025.

Alvin was raised in the church (he joined Mount Anna Baptist Church in Aiken and was baptized at the age of ten by his father) and attended Balltown Elementary (his mother was his first, second, and third grade teacher).  He graduated from Martha Schofield High School in Aiken and attended Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1963.  Upon graduation from Paine, his first job was as a History teacher at Ridgefield High School in Ridge Spring, South Carolina.  He then taught Social Studies at Lakeview High School in West Columbia, South Carolina, where he also taught English and coached the Girls' basketball team.

In 1969, Alvin left teaching to pursue other employment and he and his family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to work at McGraw Hill Publishing.  He was then transferred to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Eager to return to the South, Alvin and the family moved to Augusta, Georgia and after a few years, moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to begin a career in Human Resources Management.  In the early 1980's, he relocated to Columbia, South Carolina and continued his career at the Columbia Urban League in Human Resources.  He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the 1990's and remained employed in HR until his retirement in 2009.

Alvin joined Greenforest Community Baptist Church, Decatur, Georgia, and became a member of the Brotherhood Choir and the Usher Board. He also gave back to the community by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Alvin leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Marilyn M. Harrison; sons Jeffrey Harrison, Tucker GA, and Keith (MK) Harrison (Tina), Chicago, IL; granddaughter Karis Harrison-Rucker, Chicago, IL; and grandson Skye Harrison, Golden, CO.  He also leaves behind two brothers: Lafayette Harrison (Easter), Greenwood, SC; and Dennis Harrison (Patricia), Aiken, SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers:  Dr. Cyrus Harrison and Lawrence E. Harrison
